It Runs

Yes, it runs. Daniel, Benjamin, and Gail came home for Christmas break, and we were able to start the engine. img_1224 Unfortunately, Gail did not bring her garage clothes and so she supervised from inside.

Daniel dove under the car and replaced the oil pan, which I had removed to as part of the distributor drive shaft alignment (see previous post). He did snap off one of the ten or so bolts that secures the pan, and amazingly it has not (yet) leaked.

We turned the key and the new engine from Jupiter fired on the first turn of the key. It seemed to be running on the rear cylinders only; pulling off the numbers one and two spark plug wires did not change the engine’s speed. Even with the garage door partially open and the exhaust vented outside, carbon monoxide built up in the garage.

We had corrected similar problems with the original engineimg_1235 by balancing the air flow through the carburetors and adjusting the air-fuel mixtures. We broke out the specialty tools sent by Cousin Robert and went to work.

On the left, the blue smurf hands are adjusting the air flow into the front carburetor using Robert’s air flow tool. If you look closely, you will see a red ball at the top of the clear tube near the center of the picture. The idea is to open / close the throttle adjustment screw on each carburetor until the red ball is in the same position in the tube. This indicates similar air flow through both carburetors. color-tune-2

We then tackled the air-fuel mixture with another of Robert’s tools, ColorTune. This is a temporary spark plug with a transparent glass center that allows the technician a view of the fuel mixture burning inside the cylinder. A yellow flame indicates too much gasoline relative to air in the mixture coming from the carburetor. We adjusted the mixture screws until we could see blue flames in the cylinders. Conveniently, the front carburetor feeds cylinders one and two, and the rear one feeds cylinders three and four. img_1243

Does it run perfectly? No, not quite yet. But well enough for a drive around the park. Thank you, boys.
